Educational Offer

The educational offer is structured over a three-year period and aims to provide young scholars with solid disciplinary and methodological expertise, with a strong openness to the international dimension.

The first year is devoted to the acquisition of shared and cross-cutting legal knowledge relating to the foundations of the various legal disciplines, general legal theory, and research methodologies. Teaching activities involve members of the Academic Board as well as external guest scholars, and include the active participation of PhD candidates in the discussion of the “great classics” of the different legal disciplines.

During the first year, a compulsory 30-hour course in Legal/Academic English is also offered, delivered by a CEL (language instructor) from the University Language Centre.

The second year focuses on in-depth disciplinary training through participation in initiatives organized and/or proposed by the curriculum coordinators, also in collaboration with national disciplinary networks where available. In addition, during the second year PhD candidates are involved in the organization of internal seminars, introduced and coordinated by researchers of the Department, in which topics related to their research projects are explored and research work is presented and discussed at its current stage of advancement.

In the third year, PhD candidates assume a leading role in the organization of educational activities, under the supervision and in collaboration with the Programme Coordinator and the curriculum coordinators. They are responsible for organizing seminar initiatives, open to the entire academic community, focused on the topics of their doctoral theses, in which invited experts discuss the initial outcomes of the research. The results of these seminars are collected in a publication edited by the PhD candidates themselves and included in the doctoral series “Dimensione giuridica / Legal Dimension”.

Throughout the entire doctoral programme, curriculum coordinators and faculty members may propose additional educational activities, to be scheduled with reasonable advance notice in order to allow PhD candidates to participate in a productive and well-organized manner.
