The curriculum in Criminal Law Studies is rooted in the tradition of the PhD Programme in Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure, active since the first cycle (1986) and later incorporated into the PhD Programme in Legal Sciences. The objective of the curriculum is to offer specialized training to those who wish to further their expertise—within a perspective of scientific research—in the fields of criminal law and criminal procedure.
The methodological approach values both the most advanced tools of theoretical analysis and the in-depth exploration of interdisciplinary and comparative perspectives.
Particular attention is devoted to the analysis of the recent transformation processes affecting contemporary criminal justice systems, including with reference to the development and impact of new technologies.
Within the curriculum of study—consistently guided by a strong concern for the fundamental guarantees of criminal law and criminal procedure—special emphasis is placed on the in-depth examination of the dynamics of legal sourcesand of the relationship between the legislative and judicial components of the law. During the preparation of the doctoral thesis, research stays abroad are strongly encouraged, with the possibility of also initiating co-supervision (cotutelle) projects.
