Theories of Human Rights – Law and Society, Genealogy and Perspectives of Legal Thought

Academic Coordinator: Prof. Emilio Santoro

This international curriculum was established through collaboration between the University of Florence and three Brazilian universities: Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (UNISINOS) in Porto Alegre, Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie in São Paulo, and Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB) in João Pessoa (Paraíba).

The curriculum aims to foster the exchange of research and cultural backgrounds between Italy and Brazil on issues related to the protection of human rights, with particular focus on areas such as prisoners’ rightsthe rights of migrants and applicants for international protectioncombating discrimination based on gender and citizenshipthe rights of Indigenous peoples, and the rights of victims of human trafficking and labour exploitation.

The research approach developed within the curriculum is characterized by anti-formalism and draws inspiration from the legal realist tradition, privileging close attention to the phenomenological reality of how rights are actually employed, as well as a genealogical approach to legal analysis.
